GOLDENGATE PLUS 3D — Frequently Asked Questions

1. I can’t use the GPS or GPS will not connect. Why?

GPS is the abbreviation for Global Positioning System. To use the GPS, the GPS module must be connected and the GPS must be ON. Also, the GPS must receive signals from at least 3 satellites. The GPS will connect to satellites everywhere in the world except in enclosed areas and in places where the signals are weak (under water etc.) So, the GPS will not connect and thus you will not be able to use it in the problem areas mentioned above. Only after long periods of waiting you may be able to get a connection.

2. I can’t use the tracking feature. Why?

Tracking allows you to map your location, mark the spots you want and to go back to those spots. To use the tracking feature, the GPS module must be connected, the GPS must be ON and it must make a connection with at least 3 satellites. Make sure that your current spot does not block the GPS signals.

3. GoldenGate Plus 3D is constantly getting signals during air tests I perform at home or at the office. Why?

Homes and offices contain a lot of metals and GoldenGate Plus 3D will sense these metals so it is not right to perform air tests in such places. Remember that there are a lot of metals in the construction of buildings. Even if you are in a vacant room, GoldenGate Plus 3D may sense these metals and you may fail your tests. We recommend that you perform your tests outdoors, in open fields.

4. GoldenGate Plus 3D is getting a signal although I am keeping it still on the table. Why?

The reason is the electromagnetic interference in the surrounding environment. These interferences, referred to as noise, may result from the operation of any device creating a magnetic field, electrical devices, radars, wireless radios, and even TVs. High Rx Gain level may also cause the noise to increase. These examples may vary based on the environment you are in. In such situations, if the Rx Gain level of your device is high, decrease it or if you are still getting noise, increase the threshold setting. A higher threshold setting will allow the device to filter out the noise and provide a more comfortable use.

5. The depth did not increase (or decreased) although I have increased the Rx Gain. Why?

Rx Gain is sort of an internal multiplication process that increases the signal strength. In other words, it increases the signals obtained from objects for easier detection. When you increase the Rx Gain level of the GoldenGate Plus 3D, it starts sensing the metals around more meaning the device becomes more sensitive. As a result, the device adds all these signal values together during ground balancing and this causes some loss of depth. The most important thing that you need to know about Rx Gain is that when you set the Rx Gain level high to receive signals from smaller or deeper objects, this will also increase the signals of bigger metals, ground noise and surrounding metals. Remember that a good detector user will achieve the best results by adjusting the threshold and the Rx Gain levels accurately. The GoldenGate Plus 3D users will use the device faster and easier as they get more experienced with it.

6. The accelerometer is not working. Why?

The accelerometer measures the parallelism and the balance between the search coil and the ground. This feature will not work during air tests or if you are holding the coil still as the accelerometer is a motion sensor.

7. I can’t get depth during an air test (on table). Why?

Depth measurements can vary based on the target signal strength and your scan speed. GoldenGate Plus 3D operates on the principle of motion so it is not easy to adjust your scan speed during an air test because you will be moving the object instead of the search coil and thus the depth measurements will vary. You will get more stable depth measurements during your field tests because the search coil will be moving. By paying attention to holding the search coil parallel to the ground and to your confirmation scan speed in the field, you will obtain more accurate depth measurements.

8. During ground balancing, the number in the ground balance indicator increases and it sets at a high number. What does this mean?

GoldenGate Plus 3D may not perform an accurate ground balance due to ground mineralization or electromagnetic noise in the surrounding environment. As a result, it will continue to work at a high and wrong value. For the most accurate and deepest results, the ground balance indicator value should be between 0-5. If you get a different value, the device will not perform at its best. Remember that this value affects the depth of the device. If the value is between 5-15, you may be on a mineralized ground or moving the search coil incorrectly. Change your spot and re-ground balance paying attention to the search coil angle. If you are getting the same result after a few tries, changing the search mode to ‘high mineral’ or decreasing the Rx Gain and adjusting the threshold level accordingly is recommended. If the value is between 15-100, you may be ground balancing over a metal. Change your spot and re-ground balance. If you are getting the same result after a few tries, decrease the Rx Gain.

9. What are the things to pay attention to during ground balancing?

1) Change the search mode of the GoldenGate Plus 3D to ‘high mineral’ if you are on a highly mineralized ground.
2) Make sure you are not over a metal while ground balancing. You must follow the number in the ground balance indicator to determine whether you are over a metal or not. This number should be between 0-5 when the device is working at the factory settings. If you cannot get close to these numbers, you are probably over a metal or your Rx Gain setting is high. In such a situation, change your spot and re-ground balance or decrease the Rx Gain setting. (Search the field after a correct ground balance. You may be ground balancing over the metal that you are looking for)
3) Keep the search coil parallel to the ground while ground balancing.
4) Make sure that the Rx Gain setting is at an appropriate level for the ground and surrounding conditions.
5) Make sure you follow the steps GoldenGate Plus 3D gives you with animation during calibration.

10. In beach and high mineral modes, I can’t get a signal over a spot -where I got a signal before- when I go over it a second time. Why?

Beaches and high mineralized grounds are the toughest areas for detection. Detectors get affected by the noise resulting from ground mineralization and they lose depth in these types of fields. GoldenGate Plus 3D has a special filter for these types of grounds. This filter is in the ‘beach’ and ‘high mineral’ search modes. When searching in these modes, the metal warning tone will be heard with a slight delay after going over the target. You can pinpoint the target by making shorter and faster scans over the area where the signal is detected.

11. I dug up the detected target but I found nothing. Why?

After detection, find a clean spot, where you are getting no signal, close to the target and put the pile you dug out in that spot. Because the GoldenGate Plus 3D detects even the smallest metals, you might have dug out the target in the same pile without knowing it. You can check whether the target is inside the pile by scanning over it a few times with your detector.

12. I am getting a different value after each confirmation scan. Why?

Values obtained after confirmation scans may vary based on the target signal strength. The signal strength may be too strong or too weak. To get more stable results in such situations, dig a small hole so that you can get a better signal if the signal is weak. If the signal is strong, lift the search coil up and repeat the confirmation scans.

13. How do you pinpoint a target?

GoldenGate Plus 3D works on the principle of motion. In other words, you must sweep the search coil for the device to detect the target. To pinpoint a target, move the search coil over the target with fast and short sweeps and determine the highest point the signal reaches. The maximum point the circles reach on the signal graph indicates the center of the target.

14. The device is producing a warning tone after ground balancing without the presence of a target. Why?

Ground balancing does not prevent the device from receiving noise signals. You must adjust the threshold to an appropriate level to block these signals. Increase the threshold level (upper setting in the GoldenGate Plus 3D sensitivity menu) to eliminate the noise signals. However, increasing the threshold too much may result in loss of depth. By keeping this in mind, you need to increase the threshold setting a certain amount each time, observe the results and eliminate the noise after a few tries.

15. What is the discrimination setting used for and how can I use it?

Discrimination setting provides a more comfortable use while searching in areas containing a lot of waste metals referred to as trash metals by enabling the device to sense these metals as ferrous. If the user increases the discrimination setting, GoldenGate Plus 3D will show all metals within that range as ferrous on the screen. If the ‘trash metal’ mode is used, GoldenGate Plus 3D will not produce a metal warning tone when it detects a ferrous metal. You can obtain detailed information about this setting by reading the discrimination setting page in the technical manual and the metal ID chart at the end. Using the discrimination setting accurately is directly proportional to experience. It must be practiced and experienced by users who do not use the factory settings.

16. GoldenGate Plus 3D detects the smallest metals and I don’t want this. What shall I do?

You can prevent the device from detecting small metals by increasing the threshold setting in the GoldenGate Plus 3D sensitivity menu (upper setting). As a result of this, though, you may also miss the bigger and deeper targets with weaker signals. Therefore, you must do practices with different sizes of metals to find the right threshold level.

17. GoldenGate Plus 3D cannot discriminate every metal, is the discrimination not working?

You should not expect 100% accuracy when it comes to discrimination. All metals based on their conductivity, alloy compositions, purity and their shapes are sensed differently by a detector. In addition, discrimination is also based on a lot of other factors such as ground conditions (wet, dry, mineralized, non-mineralized), weather conditions and correct use of the device. Therefore, the more you use the GoldenGate Plus 3D and get experienced with these factors, the more you will understand discrimination.

18. I see a number indicator at the bottom of the screen during confirmation scans. This number changes until the scan is completed. How will I follow this number and what does it mean?

You must pay attention to this number. The number displayed at the end of the confirmation scan is the probable metal ID. Metal IDs typically generated by different types of metals are provided at the end of the technical manual. These values are pretty stable. As you get more experienced with the GoldenGate Plus 3D, your interpretation ability will increase and these numbers will help you to identify the metals you detect more easily.
